aBout Khor Virap Monastery
Khor Virap is one of the most famous monasteries in Armenia, located in the Ararat region near the border with Turkey. It is best known for its deep connection to Armenian Christianity and the history of the country’s conversion to Christianity in 301 AD. According to tradition, Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a deep underground pit here for about 13 years because he spread Christianity. Later, he was released and became the main person who helped Armenia become the first Christian nation in the world. Because of this story, Khor Virap is considered a very sacred and important pilgrimage site for Armenians.
The monastery complex is situated on a flat plain, but its location is especially famous because it offers one of the most iconic views in Armenia — a direct and close view of Mount Ararat. On clear days, the snow-covered peak of Ararat rises dramatically in the background, creating a powerful and unforgettable landscape. The monastery itself includes churches, courtyards, and the entrance to the underground prison where Saint Gregory was kept. The atmosphere is quiet, spiritual, and full of historical meaning, attracting both pilgrims and tourists.
